Do Tankless Water Heaters Need Maintenance?
Emily Black • October 5, 2023

Regular maintenance is required for virtually every appliance in your home to perform at its best, and that includes tankless water heaters. With the right care, they can last far longer than traditional tank-style water heaters, even up to 20 years in some cases.

Why Do Tankless Water Heaters Need Maintenance?

There are several reasons why it’s necessary to maintain your tankless water heater. Limescale buildup can damage the components inside your unit, affecting its gas burners, heating elements, and heat exchanger, and if you live in an area with hard water, high mineral levels can affect the function of the thermostat, causing the device to produce dangerously hot water.

Any performance issue that affects the efficiency of a tankless hot water tank could also easily lead to higher utility bills.

4 Signs Your Tankless Hot Water Heater Needs Maintenance

A tankless hot water heater should receive yearly (or more frequent) maintenance as recommended by its manufacturer. With that said, here are five signs that can tip you off that it’s time for a maintenance call:

1. Problems With Water Pressure

A tankless unit pressurizes and heats water at the same time. As such, a problem with the heater could cause low water pressure. If your water pressure is below 65 PSI, it’s time to schedule a maintenance appointment.

2. Signs of Leakage

Check the heater for seepage, rust, or signs of water stains on the floor. Given that the water inside the unit is pressurized, a leak could cause serious damage to your home.

3. Hot Water Runs Out During Your Shower

A tankless hot water heater should easily provide enough hot water for the duration of a long shower of about 10 to 15 minutes. If your heater is causing you to cut showers short, though, try turning its thermostat off and back on again, and if that doesn’t fix the problem, consult with a technician.

4. The Heater Shuts Off Randomly

Random shutdowns may indicate a problem with the unit’s thermocouple, which monitors the temperature inside the tank. If it fails, the heater automatically shuts down.

Tax Credit Details

Your home may qualify to save with water heater rebates! Tax credits for tankless water heaters purchased and installed from January 1, 2023 can claim up to 30% of the project cost for ENERGY STAR models with > 0.95 UEF. Claiming this credit requires the appropriate form to be filed with your tax return. Contact Blue Yeti for when that information becomes available.
